Labour Summer Camp

Each year, the NBFL organizes a labour summer camp for high school students. At these camps, participants learn about the structure of a union, of a convention, and of a collective agreement. They will receive information on occupational health & safety, the environment, child labour and on sweatshops. They will explore issues of human rights, collective bargaining, multiculturalism, and labour history. Education sessions are mostly held before noon, while leisure activities, such as visits to Magic Mountain, Fort Beauséjour, bowling, and other entertainment, take place in the afternoon and evening.

To participate, the youth must be a secondary school student (grade 9 to 12), and be a son or daughter of a member of a local union affiliated to the NBFL. The camp is free to attend; parents are only responsible to ensure transportation to and from camp.

Many national, international, local labour organizations contribute to sponsor one or more campers. Many unions finance the participation of trainers and camp chaperones. The NBFL proceeds with the final selection of these campers. As well, if some locals contribute, they can select their own campers themselves.

You may begin right away identifying young people (from grade 9 to 12) who could benefit from this enriching experience this summer at our 10th labour summer camp.

It is also important to know that each participant receives a $250 scholarship upon completion of grade 12 (meanwhile the scholarship is held in a trust fund). Since the first camp was held in 2001, the NBFL has paid out over $25,000.00 in scholarships to our young people, children of NBFL affiliates.

The NBFL labour summer camp is a good first training for future New Brunswick trade unionists.
